''Human algorithm
- [[a scenario->begin]]'' ]
(font: "Palatino")[(General, motivation) We allow ourselves to be followed. Sometimes by machines, sometimes by people. Assumptions are being made about people, through mysterious algorithms that attempt to predict the future. Everyday actions and words that are spontaneous and temporal, become emphasised. In this work, in this room I wish to gather data for further inspection, research and for new narratives. I look for meaning, codes and secrets in every movement, construct new stories, whether what I write is true, an interpretation, a prediction or a lie.
(What is it)For the past few months (specify period here) I have been following people in different places and circumstances.
The thesis is made up of reports and a story (or several) constructed out of these reports.
(Research) To attempt to come closer to what the end of privacy is I have attempted to take on the identity of a fictional persona – an amateur detective. The amateur detective exists as a tool to amplify the role of the analyst and the algorithm. The process of this thesis contains two crucial steps: data retrieval and post-production. The detective collects data and proceeds to analyse it and put together potential scenarios.
Persona
An amateur detective
Paranoid. Introverted. Reserved. Conspiracy theory enthusiast. Uses obscure reference books to teach himself human behaviour. Watches people and their behaviour in various places and secretly enjoys it. Sees himself as a brilliant detective that collects data and then analyses it. Starts to see the connections.
This is the character that creates the stories.
(Structure)Why are they structured in this way? The reason for this structure is related to the subject of prediction. The story is made up of data which is used for making assumptions and conclusions. Making a story. This could be related to large companies and ads. Or governments. Dystopia is key here. A woman is wearing a white jacket and black trousers. Her shoes are pink. She's waiting. Very still now. She walks out of sight.
16:21
A man sits and stands. He has a bag and he walks down the red carpet.
16:24
Everyone seems to have a white bag in their hands. The crowd moves forward. A group is waiting. They congregate around a massive plant. One of them sits. This person is coated in orange. They are men, all of them. One of them throws away some rubbish and comes back. There are only three of them now. The rubbish throwing man is large and he shifts his weight. There is a fourth man behind the massive plant. He hides behind the plant as if he knows that the surveillance camera cannot see him there.
16:29
They are still there, but all of them have shifted their gaze and turned their back on the orange coated man. Presumably he has insulted them and now they will not speak to him. They're all blanking him.
16:31
They've gone. Perhaps they were already preparing to move. A new group has congregated around the plant. They move away.
16:32
A man in a red jacket stands and waits. He throws some rubbish away and walks slowly almost strolling towards the entrance of the building.
16:35
The future is here.
16:35
No one stays for too long. The massive plants compels them only for a few minutes. They can not stay they want to leave this place.

Laundromat 26.10.2015
11:57
A woman enters the laundromat. She looks around. As she walks in, her eyes widen briefly. It's busier than she expected. She doesn't dare to sit on the benches next to people. She would elbow the person next to her in the gut. She decides to stand against a pillar and a table. Almost all the machines are busy, except number 4.
12:01
Her watch begins. She watches a man that sits on the bench close to the window, she looks at him from the corner of her eye. His trousers are blue and his sweater is white, offwhite, it's like a hoodie. It's a jacket and it's open. He looks out the window, the cars run by. His right leg is sticking out.
12:05
He gets up to check on his laundry. It's not finished. He stands just outside the door. She takes a picture with her phone. It makes a sound, like a click. His machines are number 1 and 2. She has number 3.
12:07
He gets up and walks out of the laundromat. He'll be back. She checks his machines, pretending to check her own. They're finished in 3 min. As she walks she looks at him just outside the door. She walks back to her pillar.
12:10
She looks at him through the window. He's facing the laundromat and he looks up at something. He has a grey t-shirt and his sneakers are dark blue with neon green details, laces and soles. His pants have a 'Nike' logo in turquoise on his left thigh.
12:13
He stands aside for some old ladies on the pavement. He puts his head through the door and checks his machine. It's not finished. When he strolls he has his hands on his back between his jacket and his back. If he ran it would flap like a cape. A short cape, the jacket only reaches over his ass.
12:17
The man stands by his machines. The woman's machine beeps.
12:21
When she takes her clothes out she was so close to the man that if she reached out her arm she could grab him. He uses the same basket she did to move his clothes. He puts a pair of shoes and a belt on top of a machine.
12:23
A woman almost falls over in the middle of the room because of a cart. An old man talks says something in dutch to the woman sitting on the bench and indicates that she should move it. He has a green hat. People could fall over. He moves the cart and briefly plays the harmonica.
12:25
The Ass-cape-man's laundry is washed. He moves them to the dryer. Machine number 20. The woman on the bench has 18. He stands in the corner and counts his money. He pays at the automat, he gets a lot of change, maybe he used a 10 euro bill.
12:28
The woman on the bench looks at the old man with suspicion. She meets his eyes every time she looks up from her phone.
12:35
She moved to the benches closer to the dryers. The Ass-cape-man puts a black trash bag inside his red bag with the logo from the supermarket 'Dirk'.

21:12
A group of boys wearing blue football uniforms appear on the field. The girls have disappeared. On one side of the field the boys are wearing blue on the other side the boys are wearing black. They're passing the footballs between them in pairs, clearly practising for an upcoming match

One of the boys has a beard and long hair in a man-bun. He passes the ball to someone. His shoulders are slumped. He runs.
21:15
The boys run out of the camera's view. The tribune on the other side of the field is filling up with spectators It's raining.

A man dressed in black walks from Starbucks and into the station.
Four people follow him in. Almost everyone wears black.
17:01
A man cycles out. The lights on his bike were on. Another man crosses with an orange bag. A group of people wearing white hats move towards the station. They enter the station. .
17:02
The man with the orange bag moves slowly His hat is white as well. He stands still for a little while and watches people pass him by. He then proceeds to walk slowly back to the station as if he has all the time in the world.
17:04
A woman in beige walks into the station.
Two people leave the Starbucks café that is next to the entrance. TThe lights on their phones are visible as they walk towards the street. Their eyes are fixed on their phones, making their progress to the street slow.
17:06
A man stands in the entrance of Starbucks. He waits, with his leg crossing the other. He's leaning against a pillar. People walk by him outside. He's watching his phone, pretending to have purpose.
17:08
Inside Starbucks, a man sits down in a chair close to the window that is facing the entrance of the train station. His back is against the window. His jacket is dark, he's looking down at something.
17:10
He stretches his arms above his head. It's a long stretch, it goes on for an almost awkward time. He takes his arms down and fold them on the table. Elbows on the table. There's a small object in front of him.
17:12
Outside Starbucks a rather large man walks into the station while looking down on his phone. Another man walks out while looking at his phone. He stops, then slowly moves under the opaque glass roofs.
17:13
A large group of people move out of the station. Presumably a train has just arrived and the crowd just came off said train. They are not a group anymore, as they are disparate and spread equally as they leave the station walking towards the street.
17:14
The doors at Starbucks open and close. No one enters. The doors must have reacted on someone passing too close by.
17:15
The doors at Starbucks open again and a man enters while lifting one arm over his head. He waves. The same man walks out again.
17:16
At Starbucks, another man is sitting down in one of the comfy chairs close to the window facing the street.. He's facing the window, but he doesn't look out. He's reading a book. He drinks from a large beige cup, an arm close to his face. He's dragged the small table close to him, claiming it for himself even thought there are three empty chairs around him. .
17:19
A man runs to the station.
17:20
A group of three congregate briefly just outside the station. They have a pram between them. They stop, put their heads together and look down on something between them. They lean close to each other. Presumably they're checking a phone for their location or where they will go next.
17:22
A man walks slowly out of the station and back in, then out again. He stops and then proceeds to stroll in small circles. He's on the phone. His legs take long slow strides. Judging by the way he moves, his movements are meant to seem unintentional. .
17:24
He disappears into Zuid station.
The comfy chair in Starbucks is empty. A man runs to the station, crossing a man that runs out of the station. The speed is urgent, but not life threatening.
17:26
Another man runs out. They seek another mode of transport, perhaps the bus station on the ring road. They seem determined in their gait. Most of the other people around the station seem to have a more casual approach to their transport..
17:28
A family of four walk out of the station. They form a small row, with two small children walking in between two adults. They're all holding hands, while the children skip. They reach up to their parents waists.
17:30
I see a child running out the station, dressed in a bright yellow jacket. No one follows.
17:31
Inside Starbucks two people move to sit at the comfy chairs . They sit diagonally and face each other. A man walks slowly outside the window and looks in at them. He walks back to the station.
17:33
The couple, a man and a woman, use the table between them. One of them has dark clothes, the man, the other light ones, the woman. Dark clothes drinks from a beige ceramic cup and folds his hands on his lap. They are talking. They move things around on the table. Light clothes sits forward and leans back again. She repeats. She ends up leaned back. They both lean back in their chairs.
17:35
Another person, a woman, stands next to one of the comfy chairs. She moves something to the table. Her jacket is draped over the armchair. She moves it. She's adjusting her clothes and backpack. She picks up a bag and a stick.
17:37
The woman leaves. The couple stays. They have occupied the table.
17:38
A bike moves to the station followed by a dog.
It is now much darker than before.
17:39
Two bikers move out of the station.
17:40
Two people run towards the station. The distance between them indicate that they know each other. One of them had a yellow jacket. The other one has a dark jacket. As the light is starting to disappear it is hard to distinguish between colours. Most seem dark, only the very bright colours are noticable.
17:42
A woman walks past Starbucks and the doors open. She stops outside it and looks in. She's on the phone. She walks a little back, towards the opening and looks in, in what can only be described as a too casual manner. She strolls a little in no particular direction. She decides to leave the station.
17:44
A crowd moves out of the station and for a moment they form a perfect pattern of six, like on a dice.
17:45
Inside Starbucks, the couple still sit in the comfy chairs. Their manner is relaxed.
17:47
Light clothes leans forward briefly then leans back again. She lifts her shirt up, to get some air on her stomach. Her elbows are on the arms of the chair. She sometimes lifts them when she speaks.
17:48
They both lean toward the table. Dark clothes moves something on his lap. She looks at it. They're close like they're conspiring a plot.
17:50
A young man runs towards the station. Halfway he changes his mind and walks.
17:51
A man walks out of the station. He's alone and walks in the centre of the entrance, seeming to take up the entire entrance.
17:52
Inside Starbucks, Light clothes has left her chair to go to the bathroom, leaving dark clothes alone. She comes back after a short while, almost too quickly. She sits down in the comfy chair and takes something from the table towards her face and leans back.
17:53
Two people with bikes walk into the station. They walk slowly, not realising that they've already passed the bicycle parking.
17:55
A group of five stand outside the station. They stand in groups of two and three. The two are an adult and a small child. They hold hands. They wait. One of the three takes the child in his arms.
17:56
They all move away.
17:57
A man with a dog waits. A woman appears and they hug briefly before they walk into the station together. A woman with tight white pants looks at her phone outside Starbucks.
17:58
She walks in. The couple is still there.
17:59
A large man in white hovers around the entrance of the station. He's heavy and he shifts his weight frequently on both his legs.

A woman enters and buys a coffee and sits at a table by the window. She sits with her back towards the window and she's facing the counter, having an overview over the entire café. Beside her there's a service station with condiments.
The music is loud, most of the tables are full. The café sounds full.
17:07
At the table in front of the woman there is a group of kids.
17:08
Another woman walks up in front of the woman beside the service station and takes a napkin from the service station. She goes back to her table in the comfy chairs next to the window facing the entrance of the station, and blows her nose. . Two women are at the service station. they're sprinkling their coffee with cinnamon. Her head is next to one of the women's waist.
17:10
She stirs her coffee. The women leave to go to their table. They're sitting in the comfy chairs by the window facing the street on the other side of the café. They can be seen by the surveillance camera from there.
17:11
A boy of twelve stands up from his table. The other boy has a skateboard and says goodbye to the remaining two girls. they speak english.
17:12
The girls leave.
Many of the tables are empty now
17:13
An old man with a walking stick walks out of the bathroom, he walks through the café and leaves.
He was large and his hair was white.
17:14
An employe, the man that handed the first woman her coffee, washes the table that the kids sat at. He clears the table next to the woman and continues to move chairs in what seems to be their original position.
17:15
He moves the table next to her further away, she sniffs as if she smells his scent. His apron is like the other two employees.
17:16
He empties the trash can next to the counter. A woman with a black coat and a fancy looking bag settles at the table next to the toilet. She sits with her back agains the wall and looks at her phone.
17:17
She dips and moves the teabag in her cup, plays with her food a little. She adjusts the see-through stockings on her legs.
17:19
She looks through the window behind her. She picks up her fork and eats the cake on the plate on the table in front of her. She has a distant look on her face, she's looking right through the floor and the walls of the cafe.
17:20
A man with Harry Potter glasses sits at a table with high chairs in the centre of the café. His left leg moves with the jazz music that's playing on the speakers. He half sits half stands. His weight is resting on his left leg, the other leg is resting on the chair.
17:22
He takes his phone to his ear.
17:23
He takes it away from his face and looks at it and puts it back towards his ear. No answer.
He drags his fingers through his blonde hair. He continues to look at his phone.
17:24
A woman with curly hair sits at the now clean table in front of her. An employee shouts her name, she doesn't catch it. After a moment of confusion she looks up at the counter, stands up and picks her coffee up. She walks back to her table and sits.
17:25
Fancy bag lady leaves after receiving a phone call.
17:26
The woman next to her blows her nose again. She talks with an older woman, perhaps her mother. She stands up, puts on her backpack and walks out. Her mother follows. She has a slight limp, favouring her left leg.
17:27
The curly haired woman sniffs and puts her fingers against her nose to make sure there's no liquids coming out. She stares at her phone and seems to be texting. Her ceramic cup is full of cream.
17:28
Harry potter-glasses continues to watch his phone. He has a bag with wheels and a laptop bag resting on top of it. The bag would pass for hand luggage on an airplane.
17:29
A couple walks in. They're in their twenties. The man sits down in the corner to the left. The woman waits for the coffee.

17:40
A bald man walks towards the toilet only to discover that the door is locked. He enquires about this at the counter and an employee gives him the code. Him and his friend, girlfriend struggle with the door still. They put their heads close together and look at the lock. An employee comes to the rescue and they open the door. The bald man enters, the girl sits at a table and waits.
17:42
The bald man comes out of the toilet and leaves a tip for the employee. He leaves quickly with his girlfriend.
17:43
Two employees talk behind the counter. The third one returns from his break. One of them cleans the shelves with the cakes and sweets.
17:45
A crowd of women walk in.
The man in the comfy chair next to the windows next to her sets his ceramic cup on the table. He's facing the wall, the back of his head is facing the rest of the café. He sits cross-legged his left foot against the wall.
17:47
One of the employees winks at a woman. They speak. He smiles at her.
17:48
A little girl and her mother approach the service counter and picks up some sugar.
The mother plays with the girls hair. It has pink stripes in it.
17:49
The man in the corner snorts.
17:50
The mother and child sit at the table next to the toilet.
17:51

He picks up his bag, stands, looks back at the table to check he hasn't forgotten something and leaves.
17:55
A blonde middle aged woman walks to a table and puts her bag on a chair. She looks at the table the man just left and moves her bag to that table. She moves his cup to the table next to her and puts her own coffee on the table in front of her. She shifts and leans back into the comfy chair.
17:57
She takes out her ipad and reads. The light from the tablet is white.
Curly puts her fingers in her mouth briefly, leans back and leans forward again. Still looking at the phone.
17:58
A red haired middle aged woman briefly meets her eyes. She ordered a soy latte. She smiles.
17:59
The mother and child look out the window together. The child turns and comments to her mother. The mother smiles and nods. She drinks her coffee. An employee put a coffee cup, the ceramic kind, on the counter. It makes a large noise, like a bang. .
18:00
The employee smiles at a girl.
Curly leaves.
Initial incident description/narrative
(18.11.2015) observed in person at the laundromat “Wash'o'Matic” in Zeilstraat 13, Amsterdam, between 15:47 and 16:27.
Laundromat 18.11.2015
15:47
A woman enters and puts her clothes in the only available machine, nr 4. A man speaking dutch on the phone passes her, as she loads the washing machine with her laundry. She proceeds to sit down on one of the benches near the entrance, across from the row of washing machines. She crosses her legs. She stole another man's seat. She hesitated for a second, not a noticeable second.
15:50
A woman enters the laundromat, dragging a bag along the floor behind her. It's the same blue hema bag that the woman on the bench has.
15:51
On the bench to the woman's right the Ass-cape man sits. He has no cape on today, but his sneakers are the same. He fiddles with a bag. He's situated a little further away than arms length. She can't reach him or grasp him. If he reached his hand out and she did the same they would maybe be able to hold hands.
15:55
The Ass-cape-man crouches, puts his elbows on his knees and stands up. He checks his machine, nr. 6. It's not ready. He leans his hands against the machine. He comes back to the benches next to her.
15:57
A man shaped like a bubble walks out of the laundromat and on to the sidewalk outside.
Ass-cape's machine is reaching it's climax, centrifuging
15:59
A machine beeps, signalling that its work is done. No one in the laundromat reacts. Ass-cape continues to sit. He rubs his left elbow with his left hand. His legs are far apart, you could put a flower pot between them.
16:01
Ass-cape-man realises his machine already beeped. He hurriedly gets up and moves his clothes to the dryers on the other end of the laundromat.
16:03
The man that got his seat on the benches stolen is leaving. He looks at the bench thief briefly before he exits. Outside he struggles to get his locked bike past hers. The thief sees this through the large windows, it looks as if she considers getting up to help him, but the feeling passes and he leaves.
He crosses the street with his bike, it has pink bags on the back with children's drawings on them.
16:06
A woman with long wet hair struts in the laundromat. She's late, last washes are up soon. She pushes her clothes vigorously in the largest machine, that can take double the amount of laundry. Wet-hair walks up to pay, the sound of coinsechoing through the laundromat.
The thief's machine, nr. 4, is ready.
16:12
The machine beeps and Ass-cape-man gets up to the dryer to get his clothes. He takes out a white tracksuit jacket and puts it on. It's his cape. He has a trash bag with him, he opens it. He gets his shoes, that he left on top of machine 15. He puts them in the trash bag, which he puts in his bag marked with the logo of the supermarket called 'Dirk'.
16:15
An asian man walks in from the street. He's wearing beach sandals. They're blue, with a white stripe across the toes. It's similar to sandals you would get at a large supermarket on sale. The hairs on his legs stand on end as he walks across the laundromat. He must live around here, the sandals being his home shoes or slippers
16:18
Ass-cape-man leaves the laundromat. He doesn't have a bike so he walks down the pavement, towards Amstelveenseweg. Beach sandals has also left. The thief is alone with other people's laundry.
16:24
The thief meets the eyes of the snackbar owner across the street. Twice. She looks away first. When she looks back he looks down at his counter. She wonders if he saw her taking pictures of the washing machines. Maybe he thinks she took selfies. When she looks back up again he's not there.
16:27
She goes over to the machine Ass-cape used. She finds a crumpled piece of paper and a corner of a candy wrapper for something 100% organic. She puts it in her pocket and takes it with her before she leaves.
Initial incident description/narrative
(22.11.2015) observed in person at the café called “Drover's Dog” in Heemstedestraat 25, Amsterdam, between 16:06 and 16:24.
Drovers dog 22.11.15
16:06
A woman that sits by the windows in the café is being approached by the waitress. She orders the chicken pie.. There are gameboy-sounds coming from the table to her right.
16:08
Almost all the tables are empty. By one of the pillars in the middle of the café a a man and a woman sit at a small table across from one another. They just got their food. They eat in silence. Not silence, the music is just a smidgen too loud. Gwen Stefani screams and whines she's just a girl.
16:10
The man chews with large chunks in his mouth. Two children dance and skip among and around the tables. One of them, a little girl shoves a table. The tinier one has a long skirt that flows and jumps. She's wearing rainboots that weigh down her steps. She marches like a princess. They chase each other casually, it's still a game they're playing, but the outcome doesn't seem to matter anymore.
16:14
The man has finished his meal and looks expectedly at his girlfriend. 'I kissed a girl' plays on the radio.
16:15
The girlfriend takes out some pills out of her pocket and hands them to the man. She looks at him expectantly. He pours himself some water and puts the pill in his mouth. He fiddles with his three day beard on his cheek while the girlfriend continues to eat.
He looks bored towards her direction. She types on her phone avoiding his gaze.
There's the beginnings of a bald patch moon on his head.
16:19
Moonboy puts his jacket on and goes to the counter by the exit to pay. The girlfriend smiles and reluctantly packs up her things alone by the table. She struggles with the zipper on her jacket. She walks over to the counter to pay as well.
16:21
By the counter, Moonboy and girlfriend talk, and Moonboy leaves girlfriend behind. She looks at her phone and waits.
The waitress hands the woman by the window a knife and realises she needs a fork.
16:24
Moonboy returns with cash, but waitress says we only take cards. She accepts the money. The woman by the window raises her phone and the blitz flashes. She turns the camera away from them and takes a picture of her lap instead.
Her chicken pie arrives just before Moonboy and friend leave.
Initial incident description/narrative
(25.11.2015) observed in person at the café “Bagels & Beans” in Zeilstraat 64, Amsterdam, between 14:45 and 14:50.
Bagel & beans 25.11.15
14:45
A woman with a pencil in her hand sits at the table by the window. She waves a drawing of flowers in front of her face. Checking the light. It's full of graphite, her hands are grey. She wears a fluffy beige jacket, the colour of a golden retriever. She has zebra pants framing her skinny legs.
14:20
She mostly looks down on her drawing on the table. She switches between holding it up to look at and putting down on the table to make it darker.
14:22
She holds the drawing in front of the window while she squints. The movements seem typical of someone who has attended a course at drawing at a preparatory art school or similar. She probably has watercolours in her bag.
14:24
The sun appears behind the cloud, showing off the wrinkles on her face. She holds the drawing up in the light.
She looks at her phone, holds it up against her ear and puts it down. No one wants to talk to her. The colour of her hair is fake, no black like that appears in nature.
14:49
There are zippers along the entire length of the legs on her trousers. Potentially splitting her pants in two, this would come in handy for the red light district.
14:35
She sways slowly from side to side in time with the music that's playing in the background in the café. While looking out the window. It almost looks like stretching until she takes a sudden turn.
14:37
She's quite severe on the paper she draws on. It leaves an imprint on the back of the drawing.
14:50
After she has left the café, she left a long hairpin behind for the next customers of the table. It's the size of a pencil and of the asian persuasion. The waitress takes it away from the table.
Initial incident description/narrative
(10.12.2015) observed in person at the laundromat “Wash'o'Matic” in Zeilstraat 13, Amsterdam, between 14:40 and 15:28.
Laundromat 10.12.15
14:40
Man with green trench coat and woolly brown hat empties machine nr 2. He moves the clothes to the dryers, nr 15. He pays, walks across the laundromat, picks up a paper and sits on one of the red benches next to the dryers. He reads, the paper is dutch. He looks east asian.
14:44
When he reads he folds the entire paper out, stretching his arms widely. The hat resting on his head is too large, too tall, so that an empty lump sags on the top of his head. It's reminiscent of a gangsta hat, thought this clashes with his short trench coat and long forest green scarf.
14:48
Two smiling asian women walk into to the laundromat. One is taller and skinnier than the other, who is short and a little lumpy. Skinny sits on the bench behind Gangsta-Chic.
14:50
Lumpy sits down beside skinny. They wait.
14:51
Girl carrying her laundry in trash bags leaves the laundromat. An old man enters. He puts a chocolate milk and a mug and a newspaper on machine 2, and loads the machine with laundry. He goes over to pay with his mug filled with coins. It's a christmas themed mug, big enough for tea or many laundry coins.
14:54
While he fills the machine with soap, his hand shakes. He's old, or on his way to getting parkinsons or a form of rheumatism, yet his strides across the laundromat are that of a younger man. He walks back and forth between the machine and automat several times.
14:58
Old man stands next to the bench. He's looking for something in his pocket, and he cannot sit before he has found it. He finds a red handkerchief and reading glasses. He dries his nose.
15:00
Finally he sits. His glasses are attached to a thread, so he won't loose them. They rest on the tip of his nose.
15:03
He reads a paper in dutch. An article on a tsunami. He crosses his legs, his shoes seem heavier than his legs, weighing them down.
15:05
He turns the page twice. It's a newspaper called 'De Telegraaf'. He tries to hide the articles. He reads about terrorists. He folds his paper on his knee several times as if he's uncomfortable. (with the notion of terrorists).
15:11
He brought packed lunch. Two small bread sandwiches with cheese. They're in a plastic bag on the table next to the chocolate milk. It's full milk, perhaps recommended by his doctor for the calcium. Or his wife, though he doesn't have a ring.
15:14
Hooded man with an earring in his left ear walks in. He gets a basket and stands next to machine 3 in anticipation, waiting for the beep signalling that his laundry is finished. He's early, though he seems to have timed it quite well, as if he wrote down the time on his phone before he left. He goes to the dryers, machine 18. He shakes his clothes before he loads then into the dryer.
15:19
Old shaky reads a profile on two community people before he turns the page. A sudden racket erupts from his machine as if he left it full of coins from his mug. This elicits no reaction from him.
15:21
A firetruck with sirens drives past the laundromat and Old Shaky looks up briefly from his paper, staring at the truck. He looks down at the paper as soon as the truck is out of sight.
15:22
Hoody left his bag hanging on machine 3. This will be a potential barrier for the next user. Though it's only a plastic bag. The norm is to use the more solid and larger plastic textile bags.
15:28
Old Shaky's phone rings and he speaks.
It's friendly, but a little formal or rigid.
He hangs up.
After he hangs up he eats his packed lunch, as if being instructed to do so.

''Practice''
We allow ourselves to be followed. Sometimes by machines, sometimes by people. Assumptions are being made about people, through mysterious algorithms that attempt to predict the future. Everyday actions and words that are spontaneous and temporal, become emphasised.
''Research''
For the past three months I have been following people in different places and circumstances. I wish to gather data for further inspection, research and for new narratives. I look for meaning, codes and secrets in every movement, construct new stories, whether what I write is true, an interpretation, a prediction or a lie.
I watch people and their behaviour in public, collect data by writing down descriptions in the form of reports, and analyse these by comparing them and putting them together. I'm starting to see the connections between them.
''Construction''
Dystopia is key here. The initial reports are analysed, categorised, filtered and put together in a new narrative. People of similar gender, age and appearance have been grouped together. This narrative is constructed by making assumptions and conclusions.

''Initial incident description/narrative''
(24.10.2015) observed at the website webcam.nl – surveillance footage overlooking the square RAI in the south of Amsterdam, between 16:20 and 16:35
''"Amsterdam RAI" 24.10.2015''
16:20

''Initial incident description/narrative''
(26.10.2015) observed in person at the laundromat “Wash'o'Matic”, Zeilstraat 13, Amsterdam, between 11:57 and 12:35.
''"Wash'o'Matic" 26.10.2015''

''"The Travel Agency" October 2014 summary''
October 2014
The Travel Agency starts searching the 3rd of October. Searched for 'travel agencz rules'. Made a spelling mistake. Found a travel agent handbook. Most searches are in english, some in hungarian and danish. There is an interest for Lindstrøm and swedish music video girls swimming hall. A member googled one of the other members (or possibly himself). The same day a member searched for a catholic church. Other searches are related to cars, skeumorphism, bank accounts, contracts, youtube spaces, architecture, immaterial practices.

''"Amsterdam Zuid railway station" 28.10.2015''
20:52
Two people are waiting. They're standing close, within arms reach. Slightly diagonally. One of them shifts. He might be cold. He's dressed in blue. He moves his arm as if he's throwing something away, maybe a cigarette.
20:54
A train arrives. They do not go on it. Blue jacket man continues to shift frequently.
20:55

The events on the football field is being filmed by a camera, standing in a booth overlooking the field. The sound of a door creaking can be heard behind the camera. Then laughter. There's a radio playing in the background.
21:12
A group of boys wearing blue football uniforms appear on the field. The girls have disappeared. On one side of the field the boys are wearing blue on the other side the boys are wearing black. They're passing the footballs between them in pairs, clearly practising for an upcoming match

The boys run out of the camera's view. The tribune on the other side of the field is filling up with spectators It's raining.

(15.11.2015) observed on the website webcam.nl, preset 4, surveillance footage overlooking the entrance of the train station Amsterdam Zuid, between 17:00 and 18:00.
''"Amsterdam Zuid railway station" 15.11.2015''
17:00
Most seem dark, only the very bright colours are noticeable.

''Initial incident description/narrative''
(18.11.2015) observed in person at the laundromat “Wash'o'Matic” in Zeilstraat 13, Amsterdam, between 15:47 and 16:27.
''"Wash'o'Matic" 18.11.2015''

She watches a man that sits on the bench close to the window, she looks at him from the corner of her eye. His trousers are blue and his sweater is white, offwhite, it's like a hoodie. It's a jacket and it's open. He looks [[out the window->the road]], the cars run by. His right leg is [[sticking out]].

A woman almost falls over in the middle of the room. [[An old man]] talks says something in dutch to the woman sitting on the bench and indicates that she should move it. He has a green hat. People could fall over. He moves the cart and briefly plays the harmonica.
17:02
The man with the orange bag moves slowly. His hat is white as well. He stands still for a little while and watches people pass him by. He then proceeds to walk slowly back to the [[station]] as if he has all the time in the world.
17:24
He disappears into Zuid station.
The comfy chair in [[Starbucks]] is empty. A man runs to the station, crossing a man that runs [[out of the station]]. The speed is urgent, but not life threatening.
17:31
Inside Starbucks two people move to sit at the [[comfy chairs]]. They sit diagonally and face each other. A man walks slowly [[outside the window->entrance starbucks]] and looks in at them. He walks back to the station.
17:26
Another man runs out. They seek another mode of transport, perhaps the bus station on the ring road. They seem determined in their gait. Most of the [[other people->comfy chairs]] around the station seem to have a more casual approach to their transport.
17:33
The couple, a man and a woman, use the table between them. One of them has dark clothes, [[the man->a younger man]], the other light ones, [[the woman]].
14:54
While he fills the machine with soap, his hand shakes. He's old, or on his way to getting parkinsons or a form of rheumatism, yet his strides across the laundromat are that of [[a younger man]]. He walks back and forth between [[the machine]] and automat several times.
17:50
A young man runs towards [[the station]]. Halfway [[he changes his mind]] and walks.
He puts a chocolate milk and [[a mug]] and a newspaper on machine 2, and loads the machine with laundry.
He stands aside for some old ladies on [[the pavement]]. He puts his head through the door and checks his machine. It's not finished.
17:06
A man stands in the entrance of Starbucks. He waits, with his leg crossing the other. He's leaning against a pillar. [[People walk by him->a younger man]] outside. He's watching his phone, pretending to have purpose.

Everyone seems to have a white bag in their hands. The crowd moves forward. A group is waiting. They congregate around [[a massive plant]].
16:15
The girlfriend takes out [[some pills]] out of her pocket and hands them to [[the man->uncomfortable]]. She looks at him expectantly.
He goes over to pay with his mug filled with coins. It's a christmas themed mug, big enough for tea or many [[laundry coins]].
Old shaky reads a profile on [[two community people]] before he turns the page. [[A sudden racket]] erupts from his machine as if he left it full of coins from his mug. This elicits no reaction from him.

Man with green trench coat and woolly brown hat empties machine nr 2. He moves the clothes to the dryers, nr 15. He pays, walks across the laundromat, picks up a paper and sits on one of the red benches next to the dryers. He reads, the paper is dutch. He looks [[east asian]].
Two smiling asian women walk into to the laundromat. One is taller and skinnier than the other, who is short and a little lumpy. Skinny sits on the bench behind [[Gangsta-Chic]].
14:44
When he reads he folds the entire paper out, stretching his arms widely. The hat resting on his head is too large, too tall, so that an empty lump sags on the top of his head. It's reminiscent of a gangsta hat, thought this clashes with his short trench coat and long forest green scarf. A machine beeps, signalling that its work is done. No one [[in the laundromat->thief enter]] reacts.
15:47
A woman enters and puts her clothes in the only available machine, nr 4. A man speaking dutch on the phone passes her, as she loads the washing machine with her laundry. She proceeds to sit down on one of the benches near the entrance, across from [[the row of washing machines]]. She crosses her legs. She stole [[another man]]'s seat. She hesitated for a second, not a noticeable second.

15:28
Old Shaky's phone rings and he speaks.
It's friendly, but a little formal or rigid.
He hangs up.
After he hangs up he eats his packed lunch, as if being instructed to do so.

''Notes on *The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life*'' –
The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life is written by psychologist Erving Goffman. It introduces the notion that everything a person does is a type of performance, and compares this with definitions from the theatre.
Why is it interesting here? I have observed people in their everyday life, them being unaware of the fact that they are being watched – and in a certain regard, what they do has been recorded. It is therefore interesting to take some of the phrases in the book and compare it to how I have observed that people behave. Or perform.
This can also be applied to online activity – the google search.
The notion of being watched and not watched is a subject that is discussed here. Who is the performance for? The reasons are many, and the awareness of it varies.
''Notes on *The Hidden Dimension*''
*The Hidden Dimension* is a text a book about proxemics – the personal distances in man. The book attempts to pinpoint and categorise these distances and zones and further explains what effect these relations have on our lives in modern society (published in 1966). The book focuses on the physical aspect of these distances – the perception of space – the space relating to other people, objects and space. Hall uses proxemics to demonstrate how the use of space affects social behaviour and seeks to create awareness of this silent language.
Here, proxemics is explained as something that exists as a physical space – a physical distance. The distances themselves – which Hall attempt to pinpoint down to measurements – are physical distances. Hall describes four distances in man – intimate, private, social and public. These are loosely based on distances and territoriality in animals, and later developed by Hall's own anthropological research on distances in man. The measurements themselves can be disputed, but there is little doubt about the existence of this phenomenon (singular or plural?). The zones are not visible or accurate barriers, but they are nonetheless very real. Once crossed they become even more present and create a conflict in our immediate environment.
The first chapter begins with this: “The central theme of this book is social and personal space and man's perception of it.” Personal space here is first and foremost a physical space. Part of Hall's agenda – stated in the author's preface – is to appeal to the city planners and the architects of his day to consider to design first and foremost to the people that inhabit the cities and buildings. These are physical spaces. Today we move in other less physically grounded spaces as well as our cities and buildings. To be sure these spaces are physical – but the movements and mechanics are entirely different. The word distance has a different meaning here. Therefore personal space is also different. What meaning does personal space gain in this different space – where distances cannot be measured with centimetres – but with access and broadband. (And why is it at all important to consider this tiny pocket book in relation to the very large discussion about privacy and security?)
Is it possible to use this book as a reference point when one speaks about data privacy? Because my territory is not only my home it's my information, my content. But when other's have access to this content where is my territory? Do I no longer have one? Is it shared and do we live under the illusion that private life still exists – and that privacy is in fact dead and buried. It is an ex-parrot.
(To extend the definition of personal space to privacy here seems to me not entirely unreasonable. ) (The world we live in today is very different from that of the one Hall lived in in 1966. We have other types of movements and other types of space. )
''Notes on *High-Rise*''
territoriality – a microsociety that reverts back to a strange kind of hunter-gatherer environment. Packs – then individuals. The building itself allows people to live out perverse lives. How is it specifically related to thesis?
They both walk down the stairs. They stop to talk at the pavement. They walk towards a blue car, that is parked next to the pavement. The parking is reserved for the apartment building blocks on the other side. The man opens the back and is putting something in it, presumably some equipment, though they still carry their stuff with them. The car blinks. They locked it.

At Starbucks, another man is sitting down in one of the comfy chairs close to the window facing the street. He's facing the window, but he doesn't look out. He's reading a book. A man walks slowly out of the station and back in, then out again. He stops and then proceeds to stroll in small circles. He's on the phone. His legs take long slow strides. Judging by the way he moves, his movements are meant to seem [[unintentional->No one]].
When he strolls he has his hands on his back between his jacket and his back. If he ran it would flap like [[a cape]]. A short cape, the jacket only reaches over his ass.

She crosses a bridge and stops by [[the market]] to eat. She eats something very small, presumably berries or roots.
She walks around at the market in the north. She picks up some logs of wood at a storage facility and carries them in her arms. When she walks her skirt clings to her legs. She walks towards [[a house]].
She is idling. She looks through [[the window->woman in window]].

They both lean toward the table. Dark clothes moves [[something->trash empty]] on his lap. She looks at it. They're close like they're conspiring a plot.
[[The woman->they move away]] by the window raises her phone and the blitz flashes. She turns the camera away from [[them]] and takes a picture of her lap instead.
He gets his shoes. He puts them in the [[trash bag->man bag leave]], which he puts in his bag marked with the logo of the supermarket called 'Dirk'.
Someone is talking behind the camera. It sounds like [[a couple of men->Someone]]. The radio is still on. It's playing 'all night long'.
He empties the [[trash can->shoes-trash]] next to the counter. A woman with a black coat and a fancy looking bag settles at the table next to the toilet. She sits with her back agains the wall and looks at her phone.
17:54
He picks up his bag, stands, looks back at the table to check he hasn't forgotten something and [[leaves->exit pay]].
He puts his jacket on and goes to the counter by the exit to pay. The girlfriend smiles and reluctantly packs up her things alone by the table. She struggles with the zipper on her jacket. She walks over to [[the counter]] to pay as well.
By the counter, they talk, and [[he leaves->his shoes]] girlfriend behind. She looks at her phone and waits.
The waitress hands [[the woman by the window->photo]] a knife and realises she needs a fork.
The man returns with cash, but [[the waitress]] says 'we only take cards.' She accepts the money.
16:06
A woman that sits by the windows in the café is being approached by the waitress. She orders the chicken pie. There are gameboy-sounds coming from [[the table to her right]].
The woman next to her blows her nose again. She talks with an [[older woman]], perhaps her mother. She stands up, puts on her backpack and [[walks out->crates]]. Her mother follows. She has a slight limp, favouring her left leg.
There are zippers along the entire length of the legs on [[her->cafe end]] trousers. Potentially splitting her pants in two.
The sun appears behind the cloud, showing off the wrinkles on her face. She looks at her phone, holds it up against her ear and puts it down. [[No one]] wants to talk to her. The colour of her hair is fake, no black like that appears in nature.
Two children dance and skip among and around the tables. One of them, [[a little girl]] shoves a table. The tinier one has a long skirt that flows and jumps. She's wearing rainboots that weigh down her steps. She marches like a princess. They chase each other casually, it's still a game they're playing, but the outcome doesn't seem to matter anymore.
17:59
[[The mother->black trousers]] and child [[look out the window->two people leave]] together. The child turns and comments to her mother. The mother smiles and nods. She drinks her coffee. An employee puts a coffee cup, the ceramic kind, on the counter. It makes a large noise, like a bang.
17:14
The doors at [[Starbucks->two children]] open and close. No one enters. The doors must have reacted on [[someone->the thief]] passing too close by.
21:12
A group of boys wearing blue football uniforms appear on the field. The girls have disappeared. On one side of the field the boys are wearing blue on the other side [[the boys]] are wearing black. They're passing the footballs between them in pairs, clearly practising for an upcoming match.
21:14
One of the boys has a beard and long hair in a man-bun. He passes the ball to someone. His shoulders are slumped. [[He runs]].
21:18
They crouch to get ready to run. They run a short distance. They repeat the process. After running they stretch, launch and kick. Loosening up, and getting ready. All in a row. [[Someone]] in a blue jacket and pants watch them. Possibly the coach.
The man behind the camera talks to [[another man]]. Says something about there being an extra person.

The man that got his seat on the benches stolen is leaving. He looks at the bench thief briefly before he exits. Outside he struggles to get his locked bike past hers. The thief sees this through the large windows, it looks as if she considers getting up to help him, but the feeling passes and he leaves.
He crosses the street with his bike, it has pink bags on the back with [[children's->two children]] drawings on them.
17:13
A large [[group of people->a massive plant]] move out of the station. Presumably a train has just arrived and the crowd just came off said train. They are not a group anymore, as they are disparate and spread equally as they leave the station walking towards the street.
17:40
Two people run towards the station. The distance between them indicate that they know each other. One of them has a yellow jacket. The other one has [[a dark jacket->the woman]].
17:57
A man with a dog waits. A woman appears and they hug briefly before they walk into [[the station->two people waiting]] together.
17:20
A group of three congregate briefly just outside the station. They have a pram between them. They stop, put their heads together and look down on something between them. They lean close to each other. Presumably they're checking a phone for their location or where [[they will go next->bubble man]].
